Satellite observations of ice types in the Arctic Ocean
QuikSCAT ice observations
Quikscat is a radar scatterometer mounted on a NASA satellite. In the winter months, the images show the
distribution of new (one year), and old (more than one year) ice in the Arctic Ocean.
In the summer when the snow is wet, it is no longer possible to distinguish between the ice types because the
radar signal cannot penetrate the wet snow.
