Logistics
An important part of the proposed project is the careful preparation of the field campaign.
Following the same and efficient logistics as in the 2004 GreenICE camp, the 2009 GreenArc camp
will be established in cooperation with Defence Research Establishment Atlantic, Canada, who already
has ice camp equipment (tents, heaters, generators etc.) at Canadian Forces Alert.
The ice camp will be
located at approximately equal distance from Station Nord and Alert, and it is therefore anticipated to
fly in basic equipment from Alert during the start of the camp operations, followed by mobilization of
scientists via Alert and/or Station Nord and Svalbard. A US C-130 will be used to supply the required
aviation fuel to Alert, and might also be used to transport people to Alert or Station Nord, as was done
during the GreenIce camp. A ski-equipped Twin-Otter will establish and supply the ice camp. An additional
Twin-Otter, stationed in the area as part of the Cryovex-08 experiment, will be carrying out the lidar
and radar altimeter measurements, and also aid in logistics flights.
Detailed logistics will be handled by DTU-Space in coordination with e.g. VECO (US). Because of earlier work
out of Alert carried out by several of the participating institutions, initiation of ice camp planning
in fall of 2008 is deemed sufficient. The likely period for the ice camp will be
April 14 - May 2 2009, depending on the detailed availability of facilities at Alert.
