Public Outreach, Education

The integrated research dealing with the physical environment of the Arctic Ocean will create a unique platform for education and outreach. The field work taking place from a floating ice camp provides an excellent opportunity for a number of media to follow scientific research carried out under Arctic conditions. We have already established contact with the Danish National Radio & Television (DR).

Camp location and data will be presented as data layers in GoogleEarth and we are negotiating with ESA/EDUSPACE and other partners of the Satellite Eye initiative how we can contribute to a "Satellite Eye for the IPY". (See Satellite Eye for Galathea-3 http://www.satelliteeye.dk/index_uk.htm). DTU-DNSC is already using GoogleEarth for mass distribution of data from the DAMOCLES and PolarView projects, so we will take advantage of the experience gained there.

Results will naturally also be presented in high profile peer-reviewed papers and at international scientific conferences.

Last but not least a new generation of arctic researchers will be the result of the project since the project has post docs attached to the project. It is envisaged that two graduate students will be invited to take part in the ice camp and collect material for their master project. One of the students will thus be working on the sediment cores and past climate part of he project and the other on bio-geochemical part of the sea ice.

Project team members contribute to both national and International education programmes for young polar researchers.

The externship of the PhD student will be carried out at one of the international collaborators. The outreach and education aspects of the project are coordinated with the DAMOCLES project of the EC and ESA's PolarView project where several GreenArc partners participate. This means that the many outreach activities can be performed at a limited budget.
